Gaviscon works in two ways:
Blocks and Neutralizes excess acid.
Gaviscon Tablets and Liquid contain two different types of medicinal ingredients. The first type (Agenic Acid/Sodium Alginate) triggers the foaming action you can feel when you chew the tablets. (Liquid Gaviscon foam is activated when it comes into contact with stomach acid.) Once swallowed, the foam builds a protective barrier between the top of your stomach and your esophagus (throat). This barrier prevents stomach acid from splashing back up (refluxing) into your esophagus, essentially performing the function of your Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). Blocking acid reflux, in turn, prevents the painful sensation of heartburn.
The second medicinal ingredient type (Magnesium Carbonate/Calcium Carbonate/Aluminum Hydroxide) provides heartburn relief by neutralizing excess acid in the stomach.

I've had issues with GERD and gastric reflux for a long time, and normally I am able to keep it in check. On the occasions when I can't, these chewables make the difference between relief and pain.
While the instructions suggest to swallow with a lot of water, I personally find that it works better if you don't drink as much water. I typically will take them in one of two ways… If I'm having a GERD attack with pain at the opening to my stomach, I'll actually use it as a lozenge. They have a nice taste, and it's like swallowing a mild foam, so as I nurse on it–the foam keeps the area calm.
If I'm dealing with high levels of stomach acid, I'll chew and swallow two tablets, then wash it down with a mouthful of water. I've found that drinking a full cup of water dilutes the product, and makes it less effective–but that's just my personal experience. (I prefer to drink water *before* I take them, if I plan to drink water.) If you chew the the tablets, make sure you chew them until you can't feel a single lump. It's very important that they get chewed thoroughly if you want relief.
But compared to the liquids, this is superior in my book. What's more, you can keep a pack in your purse or pocket and not have to worry about ducking out to a drug store. Don't take my word for it though, there was a research study done that compared Gaviscon to the drug Omeprazole (sold under names like Prilosec and Losec). The study found Gaviscon to be no less effective than a drug. To read the study, do a web search for the title, "Gaviscon vs. Omeprazole in Symptomatic Treatment of Moderate Gastroesophageal Reflux".

I have tried several over the counter products and home remedies for many years. Some have worked after awhile but I can honestly say gaviscon is thee best.
It is super fast acting. Goes to work immediately to relieve my heartburn.
Butterscotch is my favourite but any flavour will do to be honest.

I have been on omeprazole for a little over 3 years. I tried to stop once before and used famotadine and gave up. My ent recommend ordering this from Canada because it has different ingredients than the American version. Let me just tell you it works! It's a little gross how it seems to foam when you chew it but I'll take it to get off that medicine. It's been about 3 weeks and I haven't even needed one for 3 days. I'm very happy!
